WOW! 40 seasons! Who would have thought that back in 1976, a summer job would turn into such a career!! Being one of the oldest members of the production staff, this will mark summer productions numbering 197 to 201. In the off season, I still keep my hand in stage managing for Ballet Wichita Orchestra (19 years) and enjoying a fabulous working relationship with Wichita State University, all the while keeping our ever growing rental business running. I seem to get around a lot but only inside Century II. My life remains happily engaged in larger and more complex tasks working for my favorite employer. My thanks to WB…..I offer my deepest love and respect to all who work in this fabulous building and for our organization.

Stage Musical:
“It felt like we were somehow under siege. Unemployment was exploding. Thatcher seemed to attack everything that the North East was most proud of: its industrial heritage, its sense of a common purpose, even the robust humour seemed to be under attack from the middle class snobbishness which she represented…
“Things seemed to hit crisis point in 1984 when the Miners’ Strike focused all of these issues. Living in the North East where coal mining had been the life blood of the economy, and a certain way of life for hundreds of years, this seemed less like an industrial fracas and more akin to a civil war. Quite quickly the police were donning riot shields and pitched battles were taking place…”
Hall later left his small town to study writing, creating several plays about his youth in Newcastle. One piece was inspired in part by A.J. Cronin’s 1935 novel The Stars Look Down, about a miners’ strike. Entitled Dancer, Hall’s play was also heavily influenced by photographer Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen’s book Step by Step, about a dancing school in nearby North Shields.
When Dancer received a rehearsed reading in 1998 at the Live Theatre in Newcastle upon Tyne, it attracted the interest of Hall’s friend director Stephen Daldry, who envisioned it as a film with Hall creating the screenplay. Produced by Greg Brenman and Jon Finn, with music composed by Stephen Warbeck, the film featured Jamie Bell as 11-year-old Billy, Gary Lewis as his coal miner father, Jamie Draven as Billy’s older brother, and Julie Walters as his ballet teacher.
Distributed by Universal Pictures and Focus Features the film, also originally entitled Dancer, premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2000. But Björk’s film Dancer in the Dark also debuted there, winning the Palmes D’Or and prompting confusion. When executives from Universal Studios called Stephen Daldry and his team to congratulate them on their win, they realized they had to change the name of their film. That fall, the film premiered as Billy Elliot in the UK and then in the U.S., greeted by rapturous reviews and strong box office.
Elton John had seen the film at its Cannes premiere and found himself deeply moved by it. “My response to the film was profound. The story of young Billy, a gifted working class boy with artistic ambitions seemingly beyond his reach, had so many parallels to my own childhood. Like Billy, the opportunity to express myself artistically was a passport to a better, more fulfilling life.”
When discussions began to transform the film into a stage musical, Elton John enthusiastically jumped on board, delighted to write music to lyrics created by the film’s screenwriter, who had never before written lyrics, but whose gift for it was immediately apparent. The film’s director Stephen Daldry and choreographer Peter Darling also joined the project.
The musical officially opened on May 11, 2005 in the West End at the Victoria Palace Theatre where it is still playing successfully a decade later. Critical reviews were raves, with the Daily Telegraph’s Charles Spencer calling it “the greatest British musical I have ever seen.”
Billy Elliot the Musical won four Laurence Olivier Awards: Best New Musical, Best Actor (awarded jointly to James Lomas, George Maguire and Liam Mower, the boys who played Billy), Best Sound Design and Best Choreographer. It also won the Evening Standard Award as well as the Critics Circle Award and the Theatregoers Choice Award, all for Best Musical. The Broadway edition which followed in 2012 was similarly praised, winning ten Tony Awards® including Best Musical, with the American trio of Billys also jointly awarded.
On 8 April 2013, after it was announced that Margaret Thatcher had died at the age of 87, there was uncertainty whether the song “Merry Christmas, Maggie Thatcher” would be included in the performance that day, due to the lyrics including: “We all celebrate today ‘cause it’s one day closer to your death.” Director Stephen Daldry said that after “much discussion” the audience was given the choice to decide whether the song should be performed and, with only three audience members voting against it, the performance went ahead as normal.
On September 28, 2014, a matinee of the musical was broadcast live from the Victoria Palace Theatre to cinemas around the UK and other countries, with further encore screenings of that same performance on later dates. Liam Mower, one of the three actors who originated the title role, returned to play the role of Older Billy. In addition, 25 past and present actors who had played the title role on the West End performed a specially-choreographed dance number at the finale. This performance was released on DVD and Blu-ray on 24 November 2014 in the United Kingdom, and will be released in the U.S. later this year.
Lee Hall, who created the whole story, should have the last words:
“If Billy Elliot is about one thing, it is that we are all capable of making lives for ourselves which are full of joy and self-expression. Whilst we might not all become ballet dancers, we are capable of finding moments of real profundity and creativity whatever our circumstances. But more than that, we have a duty to ourselves and each other to create a society where this possibility in all of us is nurtured and can flourish.”
